Warm fall glow & facepaint

Just a couple of photos of the cutest kids ever.

Abram and Sloane, their super cool momma Jenny and I headed to the annual Eden Park Balloon Glow a few weeks ago; it's a stone's throw away from our house.  It was a perfect fall evening - not too cold yet.

I snapped these with my ever-trusty Canon point and shoot; still amazed at the quality this camera produces, even at 6 years old (yes, my camera is older than both of these kiddos put together).  Good things come with age, right?

On our walk to the event, Sloane was the perfect model with the sun setting directly behind her and Abram was the ultimate monster with his very first facepaint.  :)

Baby Shower: Laura & Daniel

A few weeks late posting... better late than never!

Back in early October, my family threw my brother and sister-in-law a baby shower for their little guy to be (you might remember them from the engagement session we did).  It's the first grandbaby for our side of the family, so we pulled out all the stops!

Scroll down for a couple (well, actually, a lot!) of fun snapshots from the day:

I have no idea what's happening here, but I love Dan's face:

iPhone Photography

Who would have guessed that a couple iPhone photos snapped on our recent vacation to Mexico would end up on the evening news?

To clarify... it wasn't about the photos themselves, but the imagery helped bring a news story to life.

After experiencing part of Hurricane Sandy on our flight from Mexico back to the states (on our way to our layover in Baltimore), my news reporter sister-in-law reached out (first making sure we were okay) and expressed an interest in phone interviewing us about our delightful journey northward.  Just so happens she was at the Cincinnati/NKY airport interviewing people about their equally delightful travel experiences.

"Would you mind giving us a quick interview over the phone?"
Sure!  I have about an hour to kill before our flight from Baltimore to Dayton... if there will be a flight from Baltimore to Dayton.

"Do you have a photo you could send?  Maybe one of you at the airport?  Or one at the beach in Mexico?"
Just so happens Scott snapped a few on his iPhone, even a panorama one.  Should do the trick.

I answered a few quick questions and texted her the photos. As I'm getting my things back in order, we hear that it's time to board... the second to last flight for the night out of BWI.  Talk about cutting it close.

After arriving in Dayton and driving back to Cincinnati, it was close to midnight.  I checked online a little bit later and found the news story.  So goes the story of Spencer Photo & Design, featured on Cincinnati's WLWT Channel 5 (thanks Laura!).  All in a day's work.

Web Design | Courtney E Photography

After creating a logo for Parkersburg, WV-based lifestyle photographer Courtney E, we started  building a website to showcase her maternity, newborn, children and family photos.  The website mainly serves as a portfolio of her best works; a blog site with a custom URL was also created to allow her the freedom to post her most current sessions. A prominent link to her social media presence (a must these days!) rounds out a site that perfectly complements her logo!

Web Design: Warren Warriors Youth Football

Two of our favorite things - football and web design!

A simple little site for the Warren Warriors Youth Football league... we had a great time at the team photoshoot and wish both teams the best of luck this season!

Logo Design: Courtney E Photography

Thanks to a mutual connection (hi Stephanie!), Scott and I were lucky to get hooked up with baby/family/maternity/lifestyle photographer Courtney to design a brand spankin' new logo for her new business, Courtney E Photography.

We LOVE the outcome of our collaboration with Courtney - just the right amount of modern & girlie. We will be featuring more branding elements for Courtney E Photography - namely a website and business cards; be sure to keep an eye out for these! And in the meantime, visit her Facebook page for samples of her work!

From the Photo Archives

Took a trip down memory lane last night, poured through old photos on my hard drive... came across these three taken in downtown Louisville probably 5 years ago. Still love each of these.

Google Knows Best

Thanks to Scott for the tip on Google's homepage today, featuring the sport I have played since I was 14... field hockey! Yes! We are finally getting some recognition, thanks in part to the blue and hot pink turf the Olympic matches are being held on (take that, Boise State!) and maybe Kate Middleton...

Into the blue?

Check out this graphical, colorful study of movie posters since 1914... but note the dramatic increase in blue-hued ones. Since when did blue become a dominant shade?  The original blog post by the artist/creator quotes a graphic designer explaining:
"Perhaps the colors say less about how movie posters' colors as a whole and color trends, than they do about how genres of movies have evolved. For example, there are more action/thriller/sci-fi [films] than there were 50-70 years ago, which might have something to do with the increase in darker, more 'masculine' shades."

Creative Use of the GIF

It seems that everywhere you turn on the internet, somebody is posting a short/cute/funny/annoying/insert word here GIF to liven up a blog post, illustrate a story or simply to showcase cute animals, especially kitties.

Every once in a great while, someone comes along and makes the GIF... artsy?

An artist by the name of Nicolas Ritter posted a very cool collection of pieces he titled "One."  A few samples are below, but be sure to check out the entire spread here.

Hipster Exercise

Every once in a while, I try and step back from my day-to-day dealings with art & design and think about how far things have come...

I first remember using Photoshop in high school, when it was version 3.0.  It's now in its 13th iteration (or CS6 if you want to get technical). We used the original iMac, I believe.

Scott and I both learned the art of photography on old-school cameras (mine was a Nikon).  We shot in black and white, rolled our own film and processed photos in a darkroom.

Nowadays with the abundance of camera phones and point-and-shoot apps like Hipstamatic and Instagram, art is literally a click away.  Not that it is a bad thing... more art = happier people.

For a challenge, I decided to create my own Hipstamatic/Instagram images, using only Photoshop and a few photos I'd taken with my iPhone.  (If I really were to challenge myself, I would have rolled my own film, shot with a true SLR, processed the images, scanned them to a computer, then edited them... mmm maybe another day).

Using a variety of filters, brushes and light effects, and with the help of the lovely (clockwise from top left) Sophie, Ari, Mr. Eko and Hugo, here is the final product...

Not too shabby!  It was fun to rediscover the artsy side to a design program I use daily (but in a more commercial way).  Expect more to come!

Digital Outdoor: Tri-State Running

As many of you know, my (Rebecca's) day job is for an advertising agency specializing in billboards.  My particular job entails working with digital billboards - those fancy, new, large computer screens on the sides of interstates you see popping up everywhere.

I design for digital outdoor clients during the day, so it was a little surreal to be sitting at my home computer, designing for a Spencer Photo & Design client at night!

Our friends at Tri-State Running Company purchased outdoor space (which is one of the best advertising vehicles for your dollar!) from a company with a display reading to I-75 Ky southbound traffic.  The design, promoting their 5k race in July and the upcoming high school cross country season, needed to be simple, with the headline containing as few words as possible (a good rule of thumb is seven words or less). One image, tagline and logo complete the trifecta of good outdoor advertising.  Having a call to action ("Register Now!") and an offer ("20% Off!") is important as well... it's all about the ROI, people!

Typically, white is NOT a recommended background for digital billboards - with some sign manufacturers, you can see the individual LED cards that form a grid to make up the display.  However, this particular manufacturer (which my day job company has bought a few displays from), has whole-sign color calibration during their manufacturing process - you won't see the tiling of the LED cards.  The white is so clear, you almost think it's a regular billboard!

Web Relaunch: Spencer Photo & Design!

Seriously... it was about time, folks!  We were in need of a fresh template to showcase our graphic design & web work and after a few months of tinkering - we're proud to announce the brand-spanking-new Spencer Photo & Design website!

As you can see, we are now more focused on the "design" part of Spencer Photo & Design - but have no fear! - we still have photography services available (our weddings, sports, family sessions, etc. are now housed at

The biggest goal for us with the new site is to showcase the range of our offerings - from business cards to logos and brochures to robust websites

We are big fans of Lightbox, and continued our use of it on the new site:

If all goes well, a mobile site will be launching soon... but until then, enjoy the new SP&!
